The Importance of Hydration

Running marathons has been a passion of mine since 2009 when I completed my very first race. Since then I have completed 14 full marathons and several other races. With each finish line, I have learned lessons along the way. Through trial and error, research and a change in career, I have gained a lot of knowledge about endurance racing. Hydration is something you don’t want to take lightly.

Most often, new runners don’t know about hydration. Drinking water seems to be the obvious, and if running longer than an hour, a water bottle may be needed. I started out with those beliefs until I ended up dehydrated at the end of a race where I required medical attention. I have since learned to add in electrolytes to my water and carry a bottle with me on every run. Not only is hydration important during an event, but also during training.

On my quest to find the right hydration, I happened upon nuun active. I received a sample in my RunnerBox, and I really liked the convenience of a little tablet that can be dropped right into a 16 oz. water bottle. The flavor was light and refreshing without being sugary. Since I was already was using Huma Chia Energy gels, I didn’t need added carbs, just electrolytes. Each nuun active tablet contains 360 mg of sodium; 100 mg of potassium, 25 mg of magnesium and 13 mg of calcium which helps the sodium and potassium absorb faster. Nuun is gluten-free and lactose-free.

I prefer to use the nuun active or nuun energy which has added Vitamin B and 40 mg of caffeine. When training for a marathon, I use nuun tablets almost daily. I like to hydrate with it before a long run and carry it in my water bottle. It is just as important after a hard workout to rehydrate with nuun. I have noticed several occasions where I find that I may be feeling a little depleted in the afternoon; lack of energy and headaches, so I drink a glass of nuun active, which always makes me feel better immediately. If you are feeling headachy, nauseous, or experiencing muscle cramps, you may be dehydrated. Kids also enjoy the benefits of nuun active, especially when they are dehydrated from the stomach flu.

You can always find a tube of nuun active in my gym bag, so I can stay hydrated while I cross train. The tubes are small enough to fit in a gym bag or purse, and you don’t have to carry around a bunch of premixed bottles of electrolytes. With nuun, you can drop a tablet in whenever you need it.

Nuun also offers another product called nuun all day. This is more of a vitamin supplement for those that don’t like to swallow pills. It works the same way as nuun active, however it doesn’t contain the same levels of electorlytes as nuun active.  With nuun all day, it can be taken 3 times a day to get your daily recommended dose of vitamins. As an endurance athlete, my immune system is always under stress. If I begin to feel as if I may be coming down with a cold, I will immediately take nuun all day. You can also take nuun in hot water, which is so comforting when you are feeling under the weather.

When preparing for a marathon, I try and hydrate with nuun active 2-3 days before race day. It is so important to be well hydrated going into a marathon. Then during the marathon I carry individual tablets in plastic bags and drop then into my bottle whenever necessary. After the marathon, I drink nuun  and have a snack that is mainly carbs with a little protein.
