Honey Stinger Product Review

After reaching out to Honey Stinger, I had the opportunity to try three of their products: Energy Chews in Cherry Cola, Energy Bar in Blueberry Buzz, and Protein Bar in Dark Chocolate Mocha Cherry Pro.

Being a “clean eater,” I was anxious to try these products because I am always looking for sugar free “clean” ingredients to keep me fueled during endurance training and racing.  After seeing Honey Stinger at a few marathon expos, I was intrigued.  I had heard they were good source for those with GI issues and that they use honey instead of sugar, a more natural sweetener.  After receiving them to try, the ingredients were a little disappointing: sugar, natural flavoring, palm kernel oil, and other ingredients I couldn’t even pronounce.  Honey does seem to be the main sweetener, but there is added sugar too.  Below are the ingredients and the nutrition facts for Blueberry Buzz Energy Bar and Dark Chocolate Mocha Cherry Pro as posted on their website.  (Note: the third listing below is the ingredient listing for their Cherry Blossom Chews flavor.  I could not find a listing for the Cherry Cola Chews, but from what I can tell, all the ingredients are virtually identical.)

Of the three products I tested, I would have to say that the Blueberry Buzz Energy Bar had the best flavor.  It really did taste like blueberries!   This bar would make a good grab-n-go breakfast or afternoon snack.  

I really didn’t care for the Protein Bar in Dark Chocolate Mocha Cherry Pro.  It was way too sweet with an overwhelming flavor of honey, so much so that you couldn’t really taste anything else.  I really didn’t like it and couldn’t even finish it.

The Energy Chews work well for endurance training but I would never race with them.  Just too hard to chew and run while trying to maintain a fast pace, and I prefer to use more natural gels.  The Energy Chews weren’t my favorite flavor either.  The Cherry Cola tasted more like a cough drop to me.   They were easy to chew and not gummy and didn’t stick to my teeth, but the flavor just wasn’t good.  I did like the added caffeine from white tea, and they are gluten free and dairy free.
